I began this piece not knowing how to play the trumpet or even having held one in person. I borrowed a trumpet in a case from a friend. The friend then chose a track that I had never heard from Miles Davis’ Kind Of Blue album. I listened to the track once using headphones. Then I was blindfolded and played static at full volume through the headphones to cut off all outside sound. I uncased the trumpet and attempted to play the song I had just heard without being able to see or hear what I was playing. After one half-hour I put the trumpet away, took off the blindfold and again listened to the Miles Davis track. I repeated this process once a day until I could play what I believed to be the Miles Davis track consistently, without errors. This took 25 days.
